Castor oil has been used for centuries to promote healing in the body, specifically with reproductive health. While growing up you grandmother or mother were probably using it for some type of medicinal purpose and you never knew it.

So what is Castor Oil?

Castor oil is derived from the seeds of the Castor plant (Ricinus communis), also known as Palma Christi. Castor oil has been used for thousands of years, dating back as far as 4,000 years.

What is a Castor Oil Pack?

A Castor Oil Pack consists of using a warm castor oil wrap (Such as a piece of wool fabric) and placing it over the lower abdomen in order to stimulate blood flow to the uterus and ovaries.

What Can a Castor Oil Pack be Used For?

Castor Oil has been used to help in cases with inflammation, growths, pain, and when an increase in circulation is needed. When it comes to fertility, castor oil packs are a much needed help for supportive and relaxation therapy for:

  • Supporting Overall Ovarian Health
  • Supporting Fallopian Tube Health
  • Supporting Uterine Health
  • Detoxifying the reproductive system before conception
  • Supporting Egg Health

This natural method can be used to treat gynecological disorders related to infertility, like endometriosis, fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc.

So How does Castor Oil Help?

Since Castor oil is easily absorbed by the body through the skin, its healing components are delivered directly into the bodies tissues. Castor oil can help the body by assisting in the removal of inflammatory components such as prostaglandins (any of a group of potent hormone-like compounds composed of essential fatty acids and found in all mammalian tissues, esp human semen. Prostaglandins stimulate the muscles of the uterus and affect the blood vessels). Therefore, decreasing pain during menses and other pains associated with endometriosis, inflammation, and adhesions. “Scientific studies have shown that Castor oil treatments can boost the immune system by increasing the number of total lymphocyte count.” It has also been proven to help in effectively breaking up scar tissue and adhesions found in the abdominal cavity, and has also been found to loosen up masses or cysts and can remove toxins from as deep as 8 cm.

How Do Castor Oil Packs Promote Healing?

There are three important parts of the body that the Castor oil can stimulate: lymphatic system, circulatory system and the liver. The stimulation of these parts of our body aids in healing organs and tissues beneath the skin where the castor oil pack is placed.

The Lymphatic System

This system includes the lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes and lymph, which is a clear to yellowish fluid. The lymphatic system also contains lymphocytes, which are the cells of this system. Lymphocytes help provide our body with an immunological defense against diseases. This system runs throughout our entire body. The lymph nodes found concentrated in certain areas of our bodies. There are many lymph nodes that surround our reproductive organs.

This system removes toxins and waste from the areas that are stimulated by the castor oil pack. The lymphatic system aids each cell in the body by allowing it to get rid of waste. The lymphatic system relies on external movement and manipulation as well as regular movements of the entire body to function. This system does not have a “pump” to move the lymph through out the body like the circulatory system does. Castor oil packs are one way our bodies lymph is stimulated. Regular exercise is also an important key to maintaining our lymphatic systems health. By applying the Castor oil pack over the reproductive system, stimulation of the lymphatic system will then occur. This helps to cleanse the reproductive organs and promote healing of damaged tissues where the pack is applied.

Circulatory System

Many of us are more familiar with the circulatory system. This system includes the heart, blood, veins and arteries, and it runs throughout our entire body. By increasing the circulation from the castor oil pack, the targeted organs will receive fresh oxygenated, nutrient rich blood. Without proper circulation to the reproductive organs they will not function at their best, therefore, inviting disease, delaying proper healing of damaged areas, and promoting formation of scar tissue and adhesions the reproductive area.

The Liver

The liver is sometimes referred to as our bodies chemical processing plant. The liver removes hormones, drugs, and other biologically active molecules from the blood. The liver then alters these chemicals, etc by changing their structure and inactivating them through different processes, leaving these inactivated chemicals to be excreted by the kidney’s through urine. If there is an excess of toxins and hormones that overwhelm the liver, they then become stored up, not only in the liver, but in other parts of our bodies, especially our fat cells.

Our liver also produces 1/3 to 1/2 of the lymph that circulates through our bodies. Leaving our liver health very important in the proper function of our lymphatic system. When our liver becomes overloaded due to poor diet, bad lifestyle choices, being sedentary or by being exposed to xenohormones (sometimes also called pseudohormones, are not real hormones, but they act as such. Some xenohormones are naturally occurring in the nature: there is a wide range of phytoestrogens and other xenoestrogens in our food and all around us), leaving or liver to not function adequately or produce lymph. This then leads to hormonal imbalances and diseases.

If you have endometriosis, PCOS, or ovarian cysts you should notice improvement during the first two menstrual cycles. During this time the ovarian pain and the menstrual discomfort should decrease considerably. As you notice improvement, taper off slowly by decreasing the number of session per week.

Castor oil packs will stimulate important detoxification systems in the body; the lymphatic, liver and circulatory systems. These packs will also encourage healthy circulation to your reproductive organs. This is all important for clearing out toxins, dead or foreign tissues and old blood. By stimulating these systems you will assist your body in preventing disease, and storage of toxins. Castor oil packs are a great way to support a happy, healthy reproductive system.
